I am at the second step, and have just applied my first coat of Zinsser BIN with a gloss roller: You can see it's quite patchy. Is this expected? Not quite the same situation as you as I was putting zinsser on a plywood wall before wallpapering but I used a foam roller and the coverage was similar. The zinsser is to form a barrier and colour cover up to stop the mdf brown showing through the final coat.

If you're satisfied the coverage is good enough to be a barrier then multiple finish coats will achiebve the same result. Personally I'd roller a bit more zinsser on the darker patches as it'll make it easier to get a consistent final coat without using a lot of it.

Thanks x 1. I'm interested in this as I will be priming some MDF soon too. BIN is for priming 'difficult' surfaces and knots, whereas MDF is perfectly uniform so a cheaper primer would be fine, no? Gerrydelasel13 Dec I did some experimenting. Zinsser BIN is definitely the standout result. Other acrylic primers simply didn't match the finish. And it's probably reduced in Screwfix on Friday. It only takes a minute to sign up. We are preparing to shellac-prime all of the walls on a rental house due to nicotine odors. Is it best to apply this product with a roller or airless sprayer? Spraying increases the amount of volatile gases in the air and should only be used in a very well ventilated area and with proper protective respirators.

You can actually get very intoxicated, legally drunk from hours of exposure. There is always a risk of fire or explosion if a large concentration of alcohol fumes are exposed to an open flame or hot spark, so be very careful. I have dealt with the identical problem of neutralizing smoking odors in an apartment. A water based primer is easier and safer to use, and I'm sure you will see good results. Because to the large areas you need to seal, I'd recommend avoiding shellac and go with latex.

Water-based primers just don't always do the trick, but when using a Shellac based primer such as Rustoleum BIN primer, I suggest rolling it on. It was awful, and I was extremely intoxicated for longer than just that day due to the fumes. My boss sent me in with this product and had no knowledge of the Shellac base. I guess I was over trusting. It is an unsafe to spray this product without extreme ventilation and proper respiratory gear.

As well, the filters on the respirator are permanently saturated with ethanol. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

I have been told by employees at paint stores that shellac works best, but if the latex does the trick, I will consider using it as you suggested. I always like to get a flat coat of undercoat on no matter how many coatsbefore top coating. Thanks x 1. OwainDIYer11 Dec I've only used BIN as a blocking coat, to apply emulsion over varnish or whatever In your case I'd be using a dedicated MDF primer. Burnerman11 Dec Thanks John, yes that was the alternative. The forums suggest BIN as a primer works well for MDF because of what you say - it creates a barrier to stop absorption so specifically the edges look nice.

I am just wondering if this is enough. Dulux satinwood says it is 'self-priming'; any thoughts on this? Seriously, for any absorbent material like MDF especially the edges I'd be inclined to give a coat of primer then undercoat - this will absorb nicely. At that point I'd go for the BIN on the edges only. Self priming paints are OK for those in a rush! Enjoy your project! Its a bit more expensive but moisture resistant MDF doesn't fluff up anywhere near as much when cut or routed.

BIN is expensive but does have it's place I only really use it for problem substrates. For MDF I would first give it a rub over with grit then prime with acrylic primer and again rub back with grit then as many coats of undercoat as necessary to get a flat colour sanding with the grit between coats, followed by two cots of top coat, giving a light sand with grit if leaving it for much more than 24 hrs between coats. In this guide we show you how to block mould and mildew stains permanently whilst achieving a decorative finish.

If I were you I wouldn't thin primer or run it through my airbrush I would get a small autobody detail gun and use that for primer. It would suck to clean primer out of an airbrush. You can get them cheap if it's just for primer. I haven't painted many lures but I have airbrushed a lot and this works best for me.

Hope this helps. After going through all of the different methods of applying primer, I found a post from someone I totally forget who that involved making a chamber for the primer out of a spaghetti can.

I made one out of 1. I glued a cap on one end of a 16 inch piece of pipe and then glued a threaded cleanout trap on the other. This allows you to fill it and then just screw the cap on when you are not using it. Then just fill it about half-way with BIN and thin it out a little with denatured alcohol. Now dip your sealed plug all the way into the primer so that you see primer coming out of the through hole. Now you have an entirely primed plug, and it usually only takes one coat.

Hang the plugs to dry and they can be painted usually in an hour or two, but some would probably say that it is better to wait about a day. If you use this method, just a note- make sure not to fill your pipe all the way, because the space that the plug displaces could cause it to overflow.

I agree, that dipping method is fantastic. It was way easier than spraying and they came out fantastic. But if you want to try and spray Bin you can thin it with denatured alcohol. Dip hang to dry.Choosing a high-quality primer is one of the key components in achieving a smooth, beautiful, long-lasting paint job. Both Kilz and Zinsser offer a variety of options. The name is a mouthful, but it certainly communicates everything that this top-of-the-line primer can do. Kilz also offers an Original Primer formula and an Adhesion Primer variety that is great for tough-to-paint surfaces.

Both brands supply homeowners and contractors with a broad range of other options as well. Kilz Premium Primer. Kilz Premium Primer adheres better if you sand the surfaces firstso it requires more advance prep than its rival product. Although it does a decent job, many users claim that given a choice between Kilz and Zinsser, they would take the Zinsser Primer based on its adhesive prowess.

When applied to two different walls in the same space, two coats each, Original Kilz Primer allowed more bleed-through, while Zinsser provided better coverage. However, Kilz Premium is a high-hiding formula, with a whiter, thicker consistency for superb opacity.

Kilz Original Primer, like other oil-based primers, has a distinctive foul odor, so if you decide to use a Kilz Primer, opt for the newer Premium water-based option or try Kilz Maxwhich has little to no odor. However, some users dislike its heavy texture, saying it makes the primer tricky to spread and brush smooth. When comparing Kilz vs. Zinsser, the two options come out fairly even in terms of mold resistance. Latex primers work well for general use, and many will work indoors or outdoors.

Since they are vapor permeable, they allow some breathability for the underlying material. Oil-based primers are also fine to use inside and outside, but they typically have a very strong, unpleasant odor.

However, they work beautifully for exterior wood that will be exposed to weather and moisture. Shellac-based primers are pricier than other varieties. Use shellac-based primers on interior surfaces only. Search for bare-metal primers, masonry primers, and ultra-bonding primers to tackle those difficult jobs. In general, when comparing Kilz vs. Zinsser primers, customers seem to lean toward the Zinsser products.
